NATURE PLAY EVENTS
Nature Play SA partners with councils, state government, education providers, local businesses, and corporate partners to deliver nature play events for local communities.
With a vision to connect children with nature through outdoor learning and play, we deliver events ranging from small school holiday programs, bespoke events, to major partnership events for thousands of families.
Our events engage families and groups in nature through play, creativity, curiosity, meaningful experiences in nature, and open-ended play.

Nature Play Festival 2019

The Nature Play Festival is an annual Festival for children and their families which celebrates and encourages play outdoors in nature!
The Festival is coordinated by Nature Play SA in collaboration with more than 30 wonderful event host organisations including local and state government, not-for-profits, playgroups, education sites, nature clubs, Friends Groups, libraries and more!
Through the Festival, Nature Play SA aims to highlight the importance of nature play for today’s generation of children and to provide opportunities for families to access nature play events and activities across SA.
So sit back and enjoy planning your spring school holiday adventures with our online Festival guide – simply select your region, take a look at what’s on offer, and make sure you book tickets or register where required. We’ll keep this page updated and you can also contact host organisations with specific queries via the event information provided.

Bat Trail

The City of Adelaide has installed a series of educational flying fox-shaped tree tags along the River Torrens, adjacent Botanic Park. Each tag has a unique fact that highlights the incredible story of these amazing creatures that only arrived in Adelaide in 2010. The tags will be can be visited at any time of the day while they are installed.

Learn to Rock Climb #1

A day on the rock is a day well spent!
The day will begin with some fun activities to get to know all participants before moving on to an introductory session to learn all about rock climbing.
Participants will operate in a small group of 3-4, taking in turns to encourage and help each other to reach the top.
Participants will be eased into the day with some lower grade climbing, then will have the opportunity to challenge themselves by having a go at more difficult climbs.
After facing the heights of rock climbing, we will venture into the beautiful Morialta conservation park and explore the Morialta falls

Bushgardens Nature Play Festival

The Bushgardens is a wonderful outdoor recreational native garden on 7 ha. Every year we provide a range of activities based on the natural environment such as making cubbies with fallen sticks and logs; an adventure bush trail through a native forest; mud play; nature totem sticks; making bee hotels and other crafts such as dream catchers; and a quiet reading area where staff from the library read nature books on the rugs under the mallee trees.

A day on the rock is a day well spent!
This day is designed for participants who have had experience on outdoor natural surface rock climbing.
The day will begin with some fun activities and a warm up walk, getting to know the other participants before moving on to an introductory session to learn all about rock climbing. Participants will operate in a small group of 3-4, taking in turns to encourage and help each other to reach the top.
Participants will be eased into the day with some lower grade climbing, then will have the opportunity to challenge themselves by having a go at some harder graded climbs. Please read finer details for further information.

Upon arriving at one of our South Australian MTB parks, our qualified and experienced instructors go through a refresher of mountain bike riding and safety.

Joining with Salisbury Nature Plays and BirdLife Australia, Friends of the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary (FAIBS) will run activities to involve children in learning about our migratory and resident shorebirds. Using scopes, binoculars and birding resources, the children will be guided into bird identification as they watch the birds feeding in the waters off St Kilda. Guides will encourage an understanding and appreciation of the wonders of nature found in this special area and build awareness of ways we can support the habitat of these birds.

To celebrate spring and Nature Play SA’s 2019 Nature Play Festival, the Victor Harbor Public Library will be hosting a ‘Critters Inspired by Nature’ craft session.

Southern Ocean Shipwreck Trail - Self Guided

Drive the lovely southern coast from the Victorian border to the mouth of the River Murray. See shipwreck sites including the Admella, the state's worst sea tragedy. 101 vessels have been wrecked and 218 lives lost in this area. The Admella and its 89 passengers and crew sank near Cape Northumberland in 1859. A guide booklet is available for the trail and there are 10 land-based interpretive signs.

The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden has created an “Arid Explorers Children’s Garden”, a free nature play garden which provides a fun and educational play space for children to spend time outdoors learning about the flora, fauna and environments found in Australia’s Arid Lands regions. This is an enclosed garden with lots of fun opportunities for climbing, building, balancing, playing in the “big red” sand pit, exploring and being creative. We also have the Children’s Discovery Walk where you can explore the eremophila garden and discover the hidden rusty animals hiding among the bushes. Start at the Visitor Centre and collect an animal discovery brochure from the gift shop so children can mark off the animals as they find them. Ideal for children aged 2-12 and a wonderful way for families to explore the garden.

Kangaroo Island Sculptures Trail - Self Guided

Come and wander through the stunning trail built in a remarkable natural environment, located in the heart of the coastal village of Penneshaw. Explore the many surprises, scenic lookouts, ancient vegetation and the stunning ravine walls. Look for the ancient ghost tree, the resident kangaroos and wallabies, or just pause and reflect on one of the beautiful seats crafted from reclaimed timber from the Penneshaw jetty. The trail is 1.5 kms in length and is an easy walk with some steps and stairs, therefore, it is not suitable for wheelchairs.
