Winaityinaityi Pangkara is Kaurna language meaning ‘a country for all birds and the country that surrounds these birds’. Located in Adelaide’s northern suburbs the Sanctuary encompasses over 60km of coastline and is home to many plants and animals. The National Parks and Wildlife Service SA website features up-to-date information on camping, park closures, fire ban season, park maps, recommended walks, lookouts and other handy hints for visitors. You can also learn a lot about parks through their Good Living Blog – a family friendly blog full of interesting things to see, learn and do. In addition they have resources for ‘Junior Rangers’ ideal for children from 8 to 14 years of age that guides children through journaling activities aimed at building a stronger connection to nature. And to take things ever further you can identify what you marine life you encounter through their Beachcombing guide and Snorkellers guide.
If you are looking to learn more about plants and animals along the coastline the Education program within Natural Resources, Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges NRM Board has some great identification charts to take along with you Beachcombing Poster. If you are feeling really inspired to make a difference along the coastline you can join a coastal community group or check out the Coastal Ambassadors Program. And if you live along the coast you can bring nature to by planting local coastal plants.
