Elizabeth Downs Primary School has 396 students from preschool to year 6. 15% of students are Aboriginal and there are 109 students enrolled in the school’s Intensive English Language Program. Year 6 learners at Elizabeth Downs Primary School are investigating how to improve the diversity of play opportunities for all children. Over six weeks, learners are exploring ways to enhance their play environments to boost curiosity, creativity, and engagement. A student audit of the school produced a heat map that identified a lack of spaces for several play genres. Students are partnering with other classes to prototype different play experiences and activate a range of spaces, including some desirable areas deemed out of bounds. A recommendation report for the school community will follow. Pre-assessment surveys and an Areas of Impact Observational Story tool were used to measure students’ connection to nature and engagement with the program. Educators are encouraged to capture meaningful moments, student voice, and reflect on the implications for their context.
